DotA 2 Player Learned Russian In-Game and Won Language Competition
Marcel Iommick won the European Russian Language Competition in Moscow after he learned Russian by playing DotA 2. I was very surprised to know how he achieved such a performance and I asked him how he managed such a thing and what’s his secret. This is what he said:
“I play DotA 2 every day and in there are Russians in every damn game. You can usually recognize them by their aggressive game style and after their cursing.
There is no DotA player who has not been cursed by a Russian player. But I looked at things a little bit differently. To win a game you need teamplay and verbal aggression and flaming hurt the team and leads to defeat. And then I thought: why should I be the enemy of my Russian teammate?! Speak on his language and win the games instead. And so I started learning Russian. The first words were swear words of course, but then I learned verbs, adjectives, I learned how to make sentences and then write texts.
Finally I came to win the European Russian Language Competition in Moscow and the most important thing is that after I learned Russian, I got to understand my Russian teammates and since then I’ve won every DotA 2 game. My win rate is now at 80% up from 35%. That’s what I call achievement!” – said Marcel.
